stupid question from the lj novice... what's a "meme"?

|(Link)|The Jargon File
has as good an explanation as any...
(Note that by no means is it a term restricted to LJ.)
yuck, the jargon file has an awful, incomprehensible definition. I think "cultural virus" about sums it up.

what's a "meme"?
Something that people start talking about because people are talking about it: self-replicating idea.
The definitions here are good, but I want to add to that.
(My personal definition of meme is that it's "a popular idea". Did that really need its own word?)
Adbusters uses the idea of "meme" a lot, they really embraced it.
The funny thing though is that the inventor of the term is Richard Dawkins. Dawkins was a sociobiologist, but when the term got a bad rap for being almost fascist, they turned around and rechristened it "evolutionary psychology". A lot of it has to look at current psychology and try to speculate was evolutionary pressures drove us to develop certain traits and stuff.
Anyway, Dawkins believes that everything is driven by our genes using our bodies to replicate, and that culture and history do not exist; they are simply illusions to make us do what we should Really Be Doing. Memes appear in there as viruses getting in the way things should be.
