We poured it on the floor and made love to the interstates
It is 4:30 AM and I am in a random net café in Montréal. This was not planned.

I was to fly back from Ottawa last night, but on checking in, discovered a minor problem: I was not in fact booked on the flight I thought I was booked on. Long story made short: someone screwed up. (Longer story made short: it was me.)

Anyway.

So it's 8:00 PM and I'm at Ottawa airport, no flight and have checked out of the place I was staying. I also have to be back in Calgary by 2:00 the following day. After a debate with the WestJet ticket agency, it seems the cheapest (by some $250) ticket I can get that lands me in Calgary on time is out of Montréal at 9:00 AM. So, ticket in hand, I hoof it to the Greyhound station, board a late-night bus to Mtl. and arrive at 2:30 AM to discover that Montréal transit (or at least the Metro part) has atrocious hours and shuts down at 1:00, not to re-open until 5:45.

Hence my whiling away the small hours of the morning in a random hole in the wall.

What a long strange trip night it's been.

Between the hours of 2:30 and 5:45? Hoofing around 2 suitcases full of books and academic papers, along with a laptop? All thing being equal, I'd have rather not been.

Anyway. Back in Calgary now. All's well that ends well, etc.

That sounds like my kind of adventure, actually. Sorry, I fail at certain kinds of being responsible.

Y'know, it probably would have been a lot better if I weren't dragging around 50 lbs of papers (in suitcases with broken wheels, so I actually had to carry them, not just drag them), and in dress shoes (so my feet are now covered in blisters). And having to be at a meeting in Calgary @ 2:00.

Actually, yeah. If it weren't for that, it probably would have been quite a bit more fun.

Also if it could have been just a teensy tad later in the day, so I could have picke up some bagels from St. Viateur...

Nice work on providing the location with a link. Is that the net cafe next to the strip club and surrounded by Chinese restos on both sides of the road?

Sorry to hear about the early-hours experience. The metro closes for the night and so do most of the buses. They have special buses plying certain popular routes at night.

Sounds about right. Of course, that also describes about half of downtown Montréal :-P

> They have special buses plying certain popular routes at night.

Yes, but not knowing the system, and having a deadline I had to meet, and carrying the suitcases around, I figured it wasn't the best time to experiment. Of course, as it turned out, one of said night buses would have taken me very close to the airport, but oh well.

I can look back on it now and laugh.
