krazy kat

No, dammit, I will NOT roll over and play dead!!!

Ok, this started out as a very heated and pissed off message to someone in particular over ICQ, and then I decided to tone it down a bit (no, make that a LOT) and make it a generalized rant. So here goes (usually I just shut my trap, delete what I have writ and keep my opinions to myself. But what's this place good for, if not to yell and kick and scream and bitch?)...

Fuck it, No.

You know, that really pisses me off.

I will fucking NOT "accept it and move on".

I cannot view various websites. The sort of sites that use the "latest and greatest" technologies. The sort of sites that use flash, streaming media and whatever else to slow my poor old P200 down to a crawling anchor.

Despite the fact that I would like to. I have a lot of interest in seeing their content. However, through the fact that I cannot afford the latest hardware out there -- and neither can 95% of the planet -- I am unable to. This is not through choice; this is a situation that is foisted upon me.

Now this annoys me, and I am attempting to bring attention to this percieved wrong. I do fucking NOT need to be told to just "accept it".

You know, if it were just me, I might even be able to. But some people seem to have this fucking elitist attitude that "I can afford the very best therefore everybody should". They seem (to me) to have no interest at all in even acknowledging the existence of those that don't.

And it's not just me. It's most of the planet. You ever read that little email story (it's been around for years) about "imagine the world as a village of 100 people," etc, etc, etc...? It's like... 8 of those people might have internet access. And maybe 1 of those 8 has a computer fast enough to view this kind of stuff.

Now if you want to put really cool shit on your site, I can understand that. And I don't begrudge you that opportunity. Maybe you want to put stuff on there that older technologies just can't do. Hell, I know I've been tempted the odd time or two. And that's just fine. Case in point, I'm watching (or trying to watch) videos at hypnotic.com. Now the whole point of these videos is... well, the videos themselves. So yeah, if I can't watch them with my older computer, well, too bad. I can understand that (although can't you at least offer them for download rather than insist that people stream them?).

What really gets my ire up, though, are the myriad of Flash, etc. sites out there that use this content for no purpose that I can see, other than to raise the barrier for entry to the damn site. Now that angers me. And I'm complaining to my friend, who knows (or should, by now) what I'm complaining about.

And what does this person say? "Accept it and move on". Ok, fine. So I happen to not be able to affort the latest hardware (something that I'm already not happy about), and this jerkwad tells me I should just lump it and not complain.

Yeah, well fuck you too.

I AM complaining. For me and the other 99 villagers out there who weren't born with a silver spoon in our mouths (okay, so I probably was. That's beside the point). That's the same goddamn "let them eat cake" attitude that earned Marie Antoinette an angry mob at the castle gates. And right now, I sympathize with the mob.

Fucking Jeezus. "Accept it and move on," he sez. Thanks but no thanks, my arse is already too full to stick that up there as well.

Now maybe I'm betraying myself here. Maybe I'm undermining the good little capitalist that I am.

I don't know.

But I don't think so. Yeah, I'm an unapologetic capitalist. Money makes the world go around, and all that. But mainly in the political sense. I believe in small government. I don't believe the government should provide social assistance to people (in most cases). I believe it's unethical to legislate charity (what else is welfare?). I strongly disagree with the notion of forcing people to support others that they don't know.

But that doesn't mean I don't believe in common decency.

Don't make charity the law. But if you have the means, if you have the option... then it's only right to support, a little bit.

And especially, if it doesn't hurt you a damn bit to make an alternate access for those less fortunate, then don't be an asshole.
